You Don't Have to Wilt From the Heat

There are people who find the hot sun and heat intolerable. For a variety of reasons, for those people, the summer doesn’t bring the enjoyment of going to the beach, an amusement park, or having an outdoor picnic. Trapped in the house because of allergies, asthma, medication, or a deep aversion to heat, many people miss out on months of comfort every year.

This dialogue is for those adults who have a supreme dislike to the sun and heat. Hot weather makes you ill. A heat wave strikes terror in the mind of a person who sweats at the drop of a hat. It means wet clothes, limp hair, a wet handshake, skin rashes, and bugs that come out with venom in their veins and an overwhelming need for human blood. The summer requires the need for a long, cold shower and shampoo everyday to take away grime, perspiration and dirt that sticks to your skin whenever the wind blows.

No one wants to be held hostage to the weather. When the sun goes down, there are many activities that can be enjoyed. There is sometimes a light breeze that is enough to walk around and do some evening activities. There is the drive-in movie, fireworks displays, an outdoor concert or dinner theatre, for example. Here we address those adult activities that can be done during the sweltering day time or a heat wave.

These summer places and activities will keep you cool and comfortable. Not outside where you get baked in the sun like at beaches, amusement parks, picnics and zoos. You can stay home in your air conditioned home all summer. But, nobody wants to do that. There are things that can be done in spite of the long, dry, sweaty heat of the day. There are air conditioned places where you can stay for hours to escape hot days and times when the electricity goes out in your neighborhood because of power overloads.

There exists a world of air conditioned locations and activities for adults. You will be cool and feel comfortable; you will not sweat. The only stipulation is the recognition that if you have to use public transportation, or own a car without air conditioning, you may be uncomfortable for a while during travel, and you may have to spend some money.

Stay home and cool all summer and read a few books. Clean the house. Or, indulge in any or all of these adult daytime indoor activities:

  1. Visit a Casino. Casinos are popping up everywhere. They function to keep you comfortable so you will stay for hours. They are always cool in the summer. They have stores, movie theatres, restaurants, bars, arcades, and musical groups. You’re allowed to dress casual. Bring your laptop, a book, or some magazines, or spend the day walking, shopping, or trying your luck at the slots, tables, or card games.
  2. The Museum. When was the last time you visited a museum in your hometown? What about another city? Take a drive to your state historical museum and re-connect with history. Go see a special art exhibit, or visit a science museum or planetarium.
  3. The Movies. The summer is famous for blockbuster movies. You could go every week. Don’t just see the Top 5 weekly box office movies. See some movies that are in the Top 20 box office. Don’t just see movies of your favorite actors. Try some independent movies or watch a movie that is in limited theatres in your city.
  4. Libraries. Ever visit your local branch library? How about the main city library? There is something always going on at a library. Go to their web site and see the monthly schedule of activities. Attend a library workshop, book club, read or write in a journal. Take all of your boxed up family photographs, go to the library, and spend a few hours putting them in a notebook.
  5. Bowling and Billiards. Recruit some friends for a few hours of bowling and pool hall activities. This could become a weekly or monthly outing. Some bowling halls have a restaurant nearby.
  6. Create an Informal Club for People Who Hate the Heat. There is nothing good about going to functions you hate because they are outdoors. Find some kindred spirits who know how to avoid the heat in style. Plan some heat avoidance activities. Distribute this list. Perhaps your friends or family will want to pursue some of these heat-free leisure interests, or have some suggestions for additional things to do.
  7. Indoor Ice Skating Rinks. Yes, they do exist. Surf the net and find one close to your city. Invite some friends to go with you.
  8. Take a Sewing or Knitting Class at your local adult education center, YMCA, YWCA, or senior citizen community center. Inquire at stores that cater to sewing goods and find out if they have classes.
  9. An Overnight Cruise or a Cruise to Nowhere. If you live near a large body of water, a cruise around the lake or harbor is great. You can stay inside, see a show, have lunch, and enjoy the summer air without being soaked by it. An overnight cruise is even better. You can go somewhere over the weekend in the comfort of an air conditioned cabin room If you are cash-full, plan an even longer cruise for 3 to 5 or 5 to 7 days to Alaska!
  10. Visit an Ice Cream or Coffee Shop. These restaurants are famous for allowing laptop users or newspaper readers to buy a cup of coffee, a sundae, or a soup and salad, and stay for hours. Some business people even hold meetings there. It’s cheap, cool, and the environment is relaxed, inviting, and informal.
  11. Shopping at the Mall. This is the original place to stay cool. Stay at one for hours, power walk, have lunch, or move around from mall to mall.
  12. Bingo Games. Not just for senior citizens anymore. Find a church or community center, get a few cards, and have fun! The more that play, the more it pays when you win.
  13. Take a Mini-Vacation. Go for the weekend, a 3-day weekend, or a day trip. Is there someplace you always said you wanted to visit but just never got around to it? Summertimeis just as good as any other time to see some sights.
  14. Air Conditioned Indoor Pools. Swimming pools can be very humid and muggy. Find one that has air conditioning. There are some hotels that allow outsiders to use their indoor pools. Make some phone calls and find one near you.
  15. Indulge Your Inner Child. Do the coolest thing you can imagine. Be open to new ideas and adventures. Take a yoga class. Find something that makes you laugh, scream for joy, gives you an “Ah Ha” moment, or is relaxing for a few hours.

You can be cool for the summer. Instead of complaining, find things to do that will not cause you to wilt in the heat. Beat the heat and have fun doing it.

Great suggestions, Carolyn. I think I'll try a few of those myself.
